About

Welcome to The Malaysianist, a newsletter investigating money and power, business and politics, and everything in between.

This is a space free from the gatekeepers but rooted in community, where you’ll find compelling interviews, sharp essays and features, and original reporting.

There will be three newsletters each week. The first post is free of charge and open to all while the remainder will be behind a paywall. Exception to the rule is if the post is of major public interest, like an expose.

Subscriptions come in three options. There’s the usual monthly and yearly options. But if you truly believe in The Malaysianist and want to contribute more, then sign up as a founding member which entitles you to quarterly reports as well as exclusive invites.

This project is purely reader supported and you can cancel or change your subscriptions anytime; no questions asked.

About Emmanuel

The Malaysianist is run by me, Emmanuel Samarathisa, a journalist from Kuala Lumpur.

I’ve spent close to a decade filing and editing copy on business and politics for the likes of The Malaysian Insider, iMoney and Focus Malaysia. I now write for newly launched The Vibes.

But despite the comforts of a full-time job, I have always believed in creating a space and community of my own. Enter: The Malaysianist.
